Overview

Neon tetras are one of the most recognizable freshwater aquarium fish thanks to their bright blue and red coloration. They are peaceful, small, and thrive in well-maintained community aquariums, making them a popular choice for beginner fish keepers.

When kept in proper groups and stable conditions, neon tetras are active, calm, and rewarding to watch.

Tank Requirements

Tank Size

  • Tank size: 10 gallons minimum (20+ gallons preferred for schools)
  • Temperature: 70–78°F
  • pH: 6.0–7.0
  • Water hardness: Soft to moderately soft
  • Filtration: Gentle flow; sponge filters or baffled HOB filters work well

Neon tetras are sensitive to rapid changes in water conditions. Larger tanks help maintain stable parameters and reduce stress.

Behavior & Compatibility

Neon tetras are peaceful, schooling fish that should be kept in groups of 6 or more. Larger groups help them feel secure and display more natural behavior.

They spend most of their time swimming in the middle of the tank and do well in calm, community environments.

Good tank mates include:

Avoid aggressive fish or fin-nippers that may stress or harass them.

Diet

Neon tetras are omnivorous and accept a variety of small foods. A balanced diet helps maintain their coloration and overall health.

Good food options include:

  • Quality micro pellets or fine flake food
  • Frozen foods such as brine shrimp or daphnia
  • Occasional live foods, if available

Feed small amounts 1–2 times per day, only what they can consume within a few minutes. Avoid overfeeding to maintain water quality.ater.

Breeding

Breeding neon tetras in home aquariums is possible but considered more challenging than many beginner fish.

Most beginners do not intentionally breed neon tetras, and no special steps are needed to prevent breeding in community tanks.

If breeding is desired, they require very soft water, dim lighting, and carefully controlled conditions.
