Panda Corydoras catfish swimming along aquarium substrate

Overview

Corydoras catfish, often called “cory cats,” are peaceful bottom-dwelling fish that are popular in beginner community aquariums. They are social, active, and constantly on the move as they forage along the substrate.

Their calm temperament and simple care requirements make Corydoras a great addition to a well-maintained freshwater tank.
There are many Corydoras species available, often sold under the general name “cory catfish,” and most have similar care needs.

Tank Requirements

  • Tank size: 20 gallons minimum
  • Temperature: 72–78°F
  • pH: 6.5–7.5
  • Water hardness: Soft to medium
  • Filtration: Gentle flow; sponge filters or baffled HOB filters work well

Corydoras prefer stable water conditions and benefit from larger tanks that provide floor space for group activity.

Behavior & Compatibility

Corydoras are peaceful, bottom-dwelling fish that should be kept in groups of 6 or more. Larger groups help them feel secure and display natural schooling behavior.

They spend most of their time along the bottom of the tank, sifting through the substrate in search of food.

Good tank mates include:

Avoid aggressive or large fish that may harass them or outcompete them for food.

Diet

Corydoras are omnivorous bottom feeders that rely on food reaching the substrate. A varied diet supports healthy growth and natural foraging behavior.

Good food options include:

  • Sinking pellets or wafers
  • Frozen foods such as bloodworms or brine shrimp
  • Occasional blanched vegetables

Feed small amounts once or twice per day, ensuring food reaches the bottom of the tank. Remove uneaten food to maintain water quality.

Breeding

Breeding Corydoras in home aquariums is possible but less common for beginners.

Most aquarists do not intentionally breed Corydoras, and no special steps are needed to prevent breeding in community tanks.

If breeding is desired, they require excellent water quality, cooler water changes, and specific conditions to trigger spawning.

They are:

  • Peaceful and community-friendly
  • Social and enjoyable to watch
  • Active bottom dwellers that add balance to a tank
